My name is Bill May and I am the first and current World Champion in the synchronized swimming Mixed Duet Event.
I began synchronized swimming in Upstate, NY, when I was 10 years old. Like any Athlete, I began synchronized swimming because I loved the sport and didn't know where my journey would take me. My love of the sport soon became a dream to be the best Synchronized Swimmer I could possibly be, and one day represent my country as an Olympian. So far, men are not allowed to compete at the Olympic Games. In 2015 Men were allowed to compete at the World Championships, held every two years, for the very first time with the inclusion of the Mixed Duet Event(a man and woman duet, like ice skating). I became the first world Champion after waiting 25 years to compete among the worlds best.
Currently, my duet partner Kanako Kitao-Spendlove and I are preparing for the 2017 World Championships in July. Soon after that they will decide whether or not to make the Mixed Duet an Olympic Event.
I truly believe in diversity in every sport and think anyone should have the opportunity to go after their dream. This is what will help our sport continue to grow.
This is where I am asking for your help. It is a long road to the World Championships. We are training between Las Vegas and California, where our club, the Santa Clara Aquamaids are based, along with our primary coach. Unfortunately, our federation is not able to support us financially, so our training, travel, and equipment become difficult to sustain.
However this is my dream, so I will do whatever it takes to make it a reality.
I have included a video from the 2015 World Championships that will hopefully give you a small glimpse of the new event, the Mixed Duet.
This is my passion, and I would love to see this event succeed and take its place at the Olympic Games.
Thank You for joining me on my journey. I'll see you at the pool!!!
